Agreement for Temporary Care of a Dog

This Bailee Agreement for Temporary Care of a Pet (“Agreement”) is entered into on this date picked above, by and between:

  1. Caregiver's Duties

  • Care for the Pet until it is returned to the Owner.

  • Provide food, water, shelter, and reasonable attention to the Pet’s health, safety, and grooming.

  • Follow any reasonable special instructions provided by the Owner:

  • Respond to the Owner’s inquiries about the Pet.

  • Notify the Owner of any change in the Caregiver’s contact information.

  • Return the Pet immediately upon the Owner’s request.


  1. Financial Terms

  • Owner agrees to compensate Caregiver as outlined in Policies.

  • Owner shall pay the cost of transporting the Pet back to Owner.

  1. Injunction for Failure to Return a Pet

If Caregiver fails to return the Pet upon demand, Owner shall be entitled to obtain a court order (injunction) requiring immediate return of the Pet.

  1. Veterinary Care and Emergency Procedures

  • Owner authorizes Caregiver to obtain appropriate veterinary services when necessary, including examination, preventive and curative treatment, diagnostic work, anesthesia, medication, and consultations. Pet shall never be subjected to research or experimentation.

  • Caregiver is authorized to make reasonable decisions regarding veterinary treatment and other aspects of care.

  • If the Pet is gravely injured or ill, a veterinarian recommends euthanasia, and treatment would exceed

  • (default $1,000.00 if not filled in), Caregiver is authorized to consent to euthanasia.

  • Owner shall reimburse Caregiver for veterinary expenses in full within one month after Owner receives proof of payment.

  1. Liability Provisions

Owner remains the legal owner of the Pet and may reclaim the Pet at any time, but shall not interfere with the Caregiver’s handling of the Pet while in Caregiver’s custody.


Owner shall not be liable for injury to Caregiver caused by the Pet, unless due to a dangerous propensity of the Pet that Owner knew at the time of this Agreement.


Owner represents and warrants that the Pet:


  • Has never been adjudged dangerous or vicious.

  • Has never attacked and injured a human.

  • Has never been used in illegal dog fighting.

  • Has no known contagious diseases.

  1. Early Termination

Caregiver may terminate this Agreement if the Owner’s representations are false or Owner fails to pay Caregiver any amount required by this Agreement. Owner must retrieve the Pet within 7 days of notice of termination. If Owner fails to do so, Caregiver may deliver the Pet to an animal shelter and is authorized to sign documents as Owner to permit euthanasia or rehoming.

  1. Limitation of Damages

If Owner prevails in a claim against Caregiver, Owner’s recovery shall not exceed the Pet’s fair market value plus any compensation paid under this Agreement.

  1. Boilerplate

  • This Agreement is binding upon the Owner, Caregiver, and their spouses, children, heirs, and assigns.

  • This Agreement supersedes all prior understandings.

  • No promises or representations are binding unless written in this Agreement.

  • Amendments must be in writing and signed by both parties.

  • Remedies are cumulative.

  • If any provision is held invalid or unenforceable, the remainder shall remain in full force and effect.
